Primal Yoga® is a dynamic yoga and martial arts fusion style that merges Vinyasa yoga with the artistry of Kung Fu and the grace of Tai Chi into an athletic, heat-building flow, while focusing on alignment, balance, strength, power and flexibility.


Primal Yoga® is a fluid and thoughtfully sequenced class that combines movement and breath to cultivate the flow of Qi and pranic energy throughout the body. We seamlessly blend yoga with slow flowing movements inspired by Taiji, Qi Gong and Kung Fu into a harmonious dance to create balance, strength and synergy in our physical and emotional bodies. With an emphasis on breath, fluidity and intelligent alignment-based sequencing, Primal Yoga® taps into our body’s own innate wisdom to unlock the healing potential within.  We build internal heat and challenge the body by moving fluidly and mindfully with the breath.  Think of it as meditation in motion. Primal Yoga® classes are designed to be yoga-studio friendly and offer teachers the unique opportunity to stand out in a crowded yoga market.


The Primal Yoga Teacher Training program is a 10-day certification program available to certified yoga teachers. In our Primal Yoga® Teacher Training Program, yoga and martial arts serve as the foundation for the exploration and cultivation of our animating life force (known as Qi or Prana). We seamlessly combine these two ancient art forms together to create an intelligent system of movement and mindfulness that enhances the way you move, the way you feel, and the way you live. This program is designed for certified yoga teachers who are interested in moving beyond static yoga postures and elevating their teaching to a new level of inspiration, artistry, and innovation.


This training prepares you to teach Primal Yoga® classes. You will learn yogic and martial arts philosophy, intelligent movement methodology, meditation and mindfulness practices, energetic anatomy, creative sequencing, and the art of energy cultivation in a hands-on, highly experiential classroom format. The Primal Yoga® style is rooted in fluid, graceful movements designed to cultivate vital energy, strength and balance in the body and mind.

This 3-day program co-led by Purple Dot Yoga Project Founder Kate Berlin and PDYP West Coast Director Liz Arch, is designed to give yoga teachers the tools to responsibly and compassionately teach to individuals and communities that have been impacted by domestic violence and trauma.  You will learn valuable, research-backed tools to help people heal and release trauma in the body and mind, break through limiting beliefs and patterns, and access greater resiliency, confidence, self-worth and empowerment.

Kate and Liz both draw upon their own personal experience overcoming trauma and intimate partner violence to help others move from victim to survivor and survivor to thriver. They understand first-hand the psychological effects of trauma, the crushing weight of its accompanying emotions like shame, anger and despondency, and how these emotions manifest in the body. They approach this work with a passionate desire to help others break through mental and physical barriers and reclaim their personal power, self-love and self-worth.

This training is highly experiential, meaning we will not just be learning about trauma in a textbook way. Trainees will dive deep into their own self-inquiry work and look at their own limiting beliefs, experiences and past traumas to build a container of safety, non-judgment, empathy, and connection in order to more responsibly serve this community.

Upon successful completion of the training, teachers will have the opportunity to become ambassadors for Purple Dot Yoga Project and expand our community of change-makers, healers and leaders.

  •  Understanding what trauma is and how it affects individuals on a neurobiological level
  •  Recognizing the fight, flight and freeze response and helping individuals shift out of these stress-response states
  • Trauma-sensitive approaches to teaching yoga including yoga postures, breathing techniques and meditations to help ground, center and support healing and self-regulation
  • Crafting a Trauma-Informed class including cuing and trauma-sensitive language, knowing when and how to apply safe touch and hands-on adjustments and intelligent sequencing

  • Journaling and self-inquiry work to uncover our own biases and beliefs and understand how our past experiences can impact our work
